In many cases, the varicose veins problem will lead to discomfort or pain, and the patient may quickly seek medical dermatology treatment. But even in cases where the patient does not experience pain, they should still get the correct diagnosis and treatment if varicose veins are suspected. Varicose veins can now be easily treated with innovative non-surgical procedures.
The dermatologist will often be able to diagnose varicose veins with a physical examination of the problem site. Sometimes they may order an ultrasound imaging test to determine whether more complicated vascular problems exist. They will inquire about the patient’s family history, medical history and any vein or vascular issues in the past.
Outstanding and board certified dermatologists Dr. Tri H. Nguyen and Dr. George Hughes III of Texas Surgical Dermatology provide varicose vein treatments to patients in Houston, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands, Texas, and surrounding locations in the golden state of Texas.
Physical Exam
The dermatologist will perform a physical exam during the initial consultation to diagnose and evaluate the condition of varicose veins in the legs. The patient may be asked to stand or sit with their legs dangling. The dermatologist will ask the patient about any specific signs or symptoms they have noticed, including any pain or discomfort. They will review the medical records and check if the vascular problem runs in the family of the patient.
As part of the physical exam, the dermatology expert will gently probe the problem areas to determine any signs of swelling. Some female patients may experience more intense pain during their menstrual cycle. They should mention such aspects during the consultation. Some of the risk factors to be assessed at this time may include:
- Family history of vein disease
- Whether the patient is pregnant
- Body mass index (BMI) of the patient
- Any pre-existing vascular condition such as DVT
- History of leg injury or trauma
Additional Investigation
The dermatologist may also investigate a few other symptoms in order to determine the appropriate vein treatment:
- Pain, swelling, heaviness or itching in the legs
- Discolored skin in the affected sites
- Signs of eczema or other skin issues in the lower legs
- Painful and hard varicose veins
- A healed or unhealed ulcer in the skin below the knee
Ultrasound Test
Depending on the patient’s condition, the dermatologist may order a duplex ultrasound scan. High frequency sound waves are used in this scan to form an image of the underlying varicose veins. These images will allow the dermatologist to determine the blood flow and identify the presence of any blood clots. The duplex ultrasound scan combines both traditional and Doppler ultrasound techniques.
Doppler ultrasound technique involves the use of sound waves to create a picture of the blood flow through the veins in the affected area. The duplex test can provide a more comprehensive picture to the dermatologist to diagnose the exact varicose vein condition.
Ultrasound exam is painless and non-invasive. Prolific and board certified dermatologists Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Hughes receive patients from Houston, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands, Texas, and other communities and towns in this area of magnificent Lone Star State for varicose vein treatment.
