At the time of pre-operative consultation for varicose vein treatment, the dermatology expert will discuss the steps involved in the procedure and help the patient make an informed choice.

If different treatment options are available for a patient, the dermatologist will recommend the most appropriate one according to the patient’s size and extent of varicose veins. The patient should feel free to ask questions about the procedure, and clarify any doubts or concerns during the consultation.

Board certified dermatologists Dr. Tri H. Nguyen and Dr. George Hughes III provide varicose vein treatment and various other procedures to patients in Houston, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands, Texas, and surrounding locations across the landscape.

Evaluation of the Vein Condition

As a first step, the dermatologist will closely evaluate the patient’s specific condition of varicose veins to determine their candidacy and recommend the most appropriate varicose vein treatment plan. They will also take into account the patient’s personal preferences for treatment and their unique health and cosmetic needs.

Multiple treatments may be required for different types of varicose veins, including endovenous laser ablation, foam sclerotherapy and ambulatory phlebectomy. The provider will create a customized dermatology treatment plan to successfully eliminate the varicose veins in a less invasive and more targeted manner.

Endovenous Laser Ablation

If the varicose veins are relatively smaller in size, the treatment provider may choose a non-surgical, laser based treatment approach called endovenous laser ablation. Following local anesthesia, the provider will create a small incision in the affected area to introduce a thin laser fiber guided by ultrasound into the targeted varicose vein.

The laser energy is designed to disrupt the diseased blood vessels and cause the vein to seal shut. The blood will be naturally re-routed through surrounding healthier veins for improved circulation. Treated veins will be gradually reabsorbed by the body, and clear skin will emerged in the treated sites.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

If certain varicose veins significantly bulge above the skin’s surface, the treatment provider may recommend ambulatory phlebectomy. The dermatologist will perform ambulatory phlebectomy by creating tiny punctures of about one millimeter along the side of the bulging segment of the vein. The affected veins will be gently removed through these tiny incisions.

The incisions will gradually close by themselves and no sutures will be necessary to close them. The patient will remain comfortable throughout the procedure. During a follow-up visit after a few weeks, both the treatment veins as well as the incision marks would typically have vanished. The skin’s surface will look normal and healthy.

Combined Procedure

In some cases, the dermatologist may decide to apply a combination of foam sclerotherapy and endovenous laser ablation, or endovenous laser ablation along with ambulatory phlebectomy.

This decision will depend on the nature and extent of varicose veins and the patient’s response to treatment. Poignant and perspicacious dermatologists Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Hughes receive patients from Houston, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands, Texas, and nearby areas for varicose vein treatments.
