Chemical peel is a non-surgical cosmetic dermatology procedure to enhance the facial skin texture. It can gently treat minor wrinkles, blemishes, and uneven pigmentation by exfoliating the outermost layers of dead skin to reveal a new skin layer with a rejuvenated tone, color and texture. Chemical peels may be categorized as light, medium and strong peels.
During the initial consultation, the treatment provider will explain the steps involved in the chemical peel procedure. The steps will vary according to the type of chemical peel treatment performed. Board certified dermatologists Dr. Tri H. Nguyen and Dr. George Hughes III provide chemical peels to patients in Houston, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands, Texas, and surrounding communities across the landscape in this part of the massive state of Texas.
Initial Consultation
The first step in the chemical peel dermatology procedure will be to examine the patient’s facial skin condition and listen to their aesthetic concerns and needs. The chemical peel expert will help the patient select the right type of peels according to their unique needs.
The estimated downtime, discomfort and costs involved in each chemical peel option will be explained to help the patient make a well-considered choice. The procedure is typically performed in-office by a qualified provider.
Procedure Steps
If the patient requires a deep chemical peel treatment, they may be given a sedative to aid relaxation while the procedure is performed. Thereafter, the provider will cleanse the patient’s skin in the affected areas, and if necessary, apply a topical anesthetic to the area.
The next step will be to apply the chemical peel solution. The solution will be custom formulated according to the patient’s unique needs and goals. The patient may feel a stinging or tingling sensation as the chemical peel is applied.
The skin peel solution will be retained on the facial skin for a prescribed amount of time. Thereafter, it will be washed off with water. The provider will then apply a soothing gel or ointment. Following deep chemical peels, a thick coat of petroleum jelly may be applied.
Once the procedure is completed, the dermatologist will provide instructions to the patient for aftercare. They may also prescribe a mild pain medication to keep the patient comfortable, particularly after a deep chemical peel procedure.
If light or medium chemical peels are used, their depth will be reduced and they may be applied without involving a local anesthetic or sedative. However, multiple treatments with these peels may sometimes be required to achieve the desired cosmetic goals. The procedure steps will be repeated each time, but light or medium peels can be performed faster, and the patient will remain comfortable throughout the treatment.
Aftercare
The patient will be required to avoid sun exposure for several weeks or months, depending on the intensity of the chemical peel used. A sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher must be used whenever the patient visits outdoors in the initial days after the peel treatment.
Maintenance procedures or repeat treatments may be required according to the patient’s personal cosmetic needs. Hard working and sagacious board certified dermatologists Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Hughes receive patients from Houston, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands, Texas, and nearby areas for chemical peels.
