What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a common procedure to make spider veins less visible. It can also reduce any pain, discomfort, swelling, and stinging that might be caused by spider veins. This procedure is minimally invasive and involves the injection of a chemical solution into the veins. This chemical solution causes the spider veins to swell, blocking off and redirecting blood flow, causing the treated veins to disappear after a few weeks.
Treatment
Sclerotherapy is a procedure that is typically done in a doctor’s office and does not require the use of anesthesia. It usually takes between 15 to 30 minutes to complete the procedure, depending on the area being treated and the number of veins being treated. More than one injection into a single vein may be necessary, and the treatments must be spaced apart at intervals of a few weeks or months. During the procedure, the patient lies on their back with their legs elevated. The area to be injected is cleaned beforehand, and some slight pain or cramping may be experienced when the needle is inserted. It is important to notify the doctor if there is any discomfort. After the veins have been injected, the treatment is complete.
Recovery
Following your procedure, it is important that you stay active and move around to prevent the development of blood clots. You may go back to your typical routine right away. Your treatment provider may advise that you stay out of direct sunlight and wear compression stockings to help speed up your recovery.
