Eczema And Frequent Hand Washing: How to Protect Your Skin

Eczema

Eczema And Frequent Hand Washing: How to Protect Your SkinEczema flares can be reduced to a significant degree by avoiding certain irritants and environmental triggers. Soaps, household cleaners, and disinfecting products top that list. It can be difficult to prevent eczema flares when you have no choice but to constantly wash your hands and to disinfect them in a bid of reducing the risk of common bacterial and viral infections.

Texas Surgical Dermatology, led by board certified dermatologist Dr. Tri H. Nguyen, provides safe and proven skin care procedures to patients in Houston, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands, Texas, and surrounding locations.

Understanding Eczema

Eczema refers to a rash-like skin condition. It includes dyshidrotic eczema and atopic dermatitis. The rash usually begins in children as young as five years of age. Most people outgrow eczema. But, for some it becomes a chronic issue with periodic flares throughout their life.

There is nothing worse than having to deal with an itchy rash. Luckily, there are several ways of treating these flares in today’s times of unprecedented discovery and innovation. There are several excellent medications available now. Your treatment provider will discuss your triggers, concerns, and all available treatment options.

Everyday triggers, in addition to environmental triggers can cause flares as well. This includes foods (such as nuts, soy, juices from fresh fruits, dairy, wheat, eggs, and vegetables and certain meats and fishes), allergens (such as pollens, dust mites, pets and molds), clothing (wool and synthetic materials that make you sweat), certain temperatures (especially hot weather with high or low humidity), stress, and hormones.

How to Reduce the Effects of Hand Washing

Hand washing for people with eczema to reduce the spread of coronavirus may lead to itchiness, cracked skin, pain, and quite possibly infection. However, hand washing is still less drying as compared to using an alcohol based hand sanitizer.

There are several antibacterial soaps that are harsh on the skin. You don’t need soaps with antibacterial elements if you use soap for at least 20 seconds. You should also use warm water to wash your hands. Make sure you always pat dry and never rub your hands together.

Applying moisturizer should be a rule every time you wash your hands to mitigate the effects of drying. Your moisturizer will also work as a barrier to prevent infections from taking root. Consider carrying travel sized bottles of moisturizer and soap wherever you go.

Many people wear disposable gloves (frequently changed) to avoid having to wash hands. You can also use gloves when working with cleaning products or disinfecting wipes. These cleaning agents tend to be harsh on the skin.

Eczema Inflammation Treatments

Severity, symptoms, and preference determines the particular therapy for eczema. Some of the therapies are:

  • Prescription-strength topical medications, such as steroids
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Oral medications, such as immunosuppressant, steroids, antibiotics, and antihistamines
  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments

Your treatment provider shall develop the best therapy plan based on your preferences and goals to help you attain clear skin that doesn’t itch. Board certified dermatologist Dr. Tri H.
