Dry Skin
Dermatologists recommend getting treated if you have dry skin because that places you at a greater risk of developing other skin conditions, such as an infection. Permanent patches of thick, itchy skin can occur because of long-term scratching.
You may also be at a greater risk of developing allergic skin reactions. You should note that allergies and skin reactions can be treated, but not cured. Texas Surgical Dermatology, led by board certified dermatologist Dr. Tri H. Nugyen, provides safe and proven skin care procedures to patients in Houston, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands, Texas, and surrounding communities.
Diagnosis of Excessively Dry Skin
Dermatologists can diagnose excessively dry skin usually by looking at it. The dermatologist will ask certain questions to create a treatment plan that meets all your needs. You should be able to answer the following questions before your appointment:
- Do you or any of your blood relatives suffer from asthma, atopic dermatitis, food allergies, or hay fever?
- How long have you suffered from excessively dry skin?
- How has the condition worsened?
- Have you tried any treatments?
These questions will help your dermatologist understand the root cause behind your excessively dry skin.
How is Excessively Dry Skin Treated?
The goal of your treatment will be to:
- Soothe the skin by getting rid of pain, itch and other symptoms
- Give your skin the missing ingredient to help it heal
- Teach you ways to prevent dry skin from returning
You will be provided with a customized treatment plan since each patient has unique needs. This includes:
Moisturizer
You will be provided with a moisturizer that contains an appropriate amount of ceramides, urea, glycerol, lactic acid and other active ingredients for healing the skin. The right mix will help in hydrating the skin and restoring its outer layer. Some patients may need a prescription moisturizer.
Treating Underlying Skin Conditions
Excessively dry skin can be caused by certain skin conditions, such as ichthyosis, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. You would need to treat the condition if you want to heal dry skin.
Plan for Protecting the Skin
Do you need to wet your hands frequently during the day as part of your job? Do you work with substances, like cement? Do you perform other activities that may lead to excessively dry skin? You need to protect your skin if you want to effectively heal it.
Outcome for Excessively Dry Skin
Your skin should heal if you follow the prescribed treatment plan. You should let the dermatologist know if you:
- Cannot apply moisturizer as much as necessary
- Cannot reach the places where you need to apply the moisturizer
- Have trouble protecting your skin when at work
Your dermatologist will work with you to develop an effective plan, such as prescribing creams and ointments instead of lotion. Creams and ointments are generally less irritating than lotions for fighting off dry skin.
