Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition which leads to excessive sweating. People with this condition usually sweat from one or two body areas. The sweating typically happens in the feet, palms, head, and the underarms. One or two body areas may start dripping with sweat while the rest of the body keeps dry.

Dermatologists can help in controlling excessive sweating. However, before the treatment begins the treatment provider will determine the underlying cause behind excessive sweating in order to recommend an appropriate solution.

Texas Surgical Dermatology, led by board certified dermatologist Dr. Tri H. Nugyen, provides reliable and salient skin care procedures to patients in Houston, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands, Texas, and surrounding locations.

How is Hyperhidrosis Treated?

These are a few treatment options used by dermatologists for controlling hyperhidrosis in patients:

Antiperspirants

This is the first treatment option recommended by dermatologists. It is also the most affordable option. It is quite effective when applied as directed. Your dermatologist may recommend a clinical-strength or a regular antiperspirant. The treatment provider may prescribe stronger anti-perspirants for some patients.

Uses: Apply to hands, underarms, hairline, and feet

Work: Antiperspirant sits on top of the skin and gets pulled into sweat glands when you start sweating. It effectively plugs the sweat glands. The body sends a signal to stop producing sweat when it senses that the sweat glands are plugged.

Botulinum toxin injections

A weak form of Botox or botulinum toxin will be injected by the dermatologist in the underarms. You would be given tiny amounts of the medicine for treating excessive sweating. Patients experience little or no discomfort and pain when the procedure is performed appropriately.

Uses: Underarms

Work: The FDA has approved botulinum toxin for treating excessive sweating in the underarms. Research studies findings suggest that the treatment may be effective in other body areas as well. It can help post-menopausal women that sweat excessively from the head. It may be effective in controlling sweating in the hands and feet as well.

Prescription medicine

Many patients are provided with a prescription medication for temporarily reducing sweating. These medications work on the entire body.

Uses: Prescription medicines can effectively treat excessive sweating in the entire body. The medicine is an effective treatment in post-menopausal women that sweat excessively in their head.

Work: Prescription medications prevent the body’s sweat glands from working. People working in hot places, athletes, and anyone living in warm climate should be careful while using these medications. The body may lose its ability to cool itself.

Surgery

Your dermatologist may recommend performing a surgery if all other treatment options fail. Surgery is a permanent option and carries risk. These surgeries can be used for stopping excessive sweating:

  • Sympathectomy
  • Surgical removal of sweat glands

Work: Sweat glands in the underarms can be surgically removed by your dermatologist. The surgery can be performed as an in-office procedure. Only the treatment area will be numbed allowing you to remain awake during the surgery.

Following techniques may be used for removing underarm sweat glands:

  • Excision (cut out sweat glands)
  • Laser surgery (vaporize)
  • Liposuction (remove with suction)
  • Curettage (scrape out)
