Spider Vein (Sclerotherapy)

plastic-surgeon-300x200 Spider Vein (Sclerotherapy) Treatment Recovery Houston DermatologistSclerotherapy is one of the oldest dermatology treatments that is still used as the first choice of treatment for spider veins and small varicose veins. The procedure involves direct injecting of medicated saline solution into the targeted veins. Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive technique, and the patient will go through little to no discomfort or downtime.

In any case, some aftercare will be required following the spider vein treatment with sclerotherpay. During the pre-op consultation, the vein treatment provider will discuss all aspects of the procedure and recovery, and advise appropriate precautions. Board certified dermatologists Dr. Tri H. Nguyen and Dr. George Hughes III provide sclerotherapy to patients in Houston, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands, Texas, and surrounding communities.

Early Recovery Period

The patient will receive detailed instructions from the vein treatment provider regarding the care to be taken in the early recovery period. This will cover instructions about skin care and alerting the patient about the potential side effects and signs of complication so that they can seek medical attention in a timely manner.

Once the injectable dermatology procedure is completed, a significant reduction in the spider vein appearance will be noticed. For most patients, nearly 50 to 75 percent of the treated veins will be eliminated for good once the treatment is over.

In the first treatment session itself some of the veins will disappear, but other veins may get totally removed after multiple treatments. In some cases, a few stubborn veins may have to be additionally treated with a combination other solutions to achieve comprehensive results.

Multiple injection treatments are usually required to achieve optimal results with sclerotherapy. Patients may experience minor post-treatment symptoms such as skin reddening, mild bruising, discoloration and occasional blisters. But these side effects will usually get resolved without any special treatment over a period one to two months. If the symptoms are persistent or severe, the patient will have to get medical attention.

Other Recovery Aspects

Following sclerotherapy vein treatment, for the first few weeks, most patients will be required to wear special stockings. This will help ensure that the treated veins remains closed and the bruising is minimized. The patient will have to avoid direct sun exposure in the treated areas for a few weeks. They should use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher for more protection against the sun.

Minor areas of scarring may sometimes occur where the needles have been injected. To achieve safe and predictable outcomes, the patient should diligently follow the care guidance given by the vein treatment provider.

Compression stockings should be worn regularly exactly as advised. The patient should restrict their level of activities within the prescribed limits. Board certified dermatologists Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Hughes receive patients from Houston, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands, Texas, and other cities in this part of The Lone Star State.

Results

Multiple treatment sessions will usually be necessary to removal all spider veins. If the vein condition is progressive, the patient may have to receive vein treatment every few years. Follow-up appointments to the dermatologist’s office should be completed as per schedule to achieve the finest outcomes.
